Lafayette Ends 11-Year Drought, Oxford Stays Perfect in Week 8 Region Play

Week 8 of the high school football season delivered two tight region contests, with Lafayette and Oxford each securing wins that carry significant standings weight. The Lafayette Oxford region football wins came by a combined seven points, and both outcomes reshaped the early league in their respective classifications.

At William L. Buford, Lafayette edged West Point 31-30 in Region 1-5A play, snapping an 11-game losing streak to the Green Wave. The Commodores improved to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in region, while West Point fell to 0-7 and 0-2.

West Point struck early with a 5-yard run and an 83-yard burst, but Lafayette answered through the legs of Justice Vaughn and Corey Howell, each of whom scored two rushing touchdowns. The Commodores’ defense then took over in the second half, forcing three turnovers on downs, including back-to-back stops that led to 10 points and a nine-point cushion.

The Green Wave did not fold. A fourth-and-long conversion kept a drive alive for a score, and after West Point recovered an onside kick, Lafayette fumbled the ball back. But the Commodores forced a third turnover on downs to seal the win, their first over West Point in 11 meetings. West Point entered the game having lost six straight.

Oxford Stays Unbeaten in Region 2-7A with Late Field Goal

On the road at Gluckstadt, Oxford defeated Germantown 27-24 to remain alone atop Region 2-7A at 2-0. The Chargers are 6-1 overall, while the Mavericks dropped to 4-3 and 1-1 in region play. It was Germantown’s first region loss of the season.

Price Renovich accounted for 14 of Oxford’s final 24 points, throwing a touchdown pass and running for a 26-yard score. Davis Carruth caught a 16-yard touchdown in the third quarter, and Demar Jamerson added a 5-yard scoring run early in the fourth. Germantown tied the game at 24 with under five minutes left, but Michael Thompson drilled a 38-yard field goal with 96 seconds remaining to decide it.

The win keeps Oxford perfect in region play and avenges a one-point victory over Germantown last year at home. The Chargers have two home region games next, hosting Clinton before facing Murrah on October 30 at Bobby Holcomb Field.

What’s Next for the Winners

Lafayette hits the road for its next two region contests, traveling to Columbus before visiting Caledonia on October 30. Oxford, meanwhile, stays home for Clinton and Murrah as it looks to protect its Region 2-7A lead.
