Dubois Needs 17 Seconds to Drop Wardley, Two Rounds to Finish the Rematch

Daniel Dubois lands a punch on Fabio Wardley

Daniel Dubois retained the WBO heavyweight title with a second-round stoppage of Fabio Wardley at London’s O2 Arena on 17 October 2026, and the Dubois Wardley rematch result arrived far faster than almost anyone expected: a straight right put Wardley down after just 17 seconds of round one.

How the rematch ended so quickly

Wardley beat the count and survived to the end of the opening round, but he never found a way to slow Dubois down. In the second, Dubois overwhelmed him again, backing him into a corner repeatedly. Wardley’s hands were low and his punches wild and telegraphed, and his trainer Ben Davison threw in the towel to end it.

The finish was a stark contrast to their first meeting in Manchester in May, when Dubois stopped Wardley in round 11 after being knocked down twice himself. Dubois said afterwards that he had bad intentions from the start and needed to show he meant business. Wardley, he added, is a great opponent, but it was his time and era.

Dubois, 29, is now 24 wins with 23 knockouts and three defeats. Thirteen of those wins have come inside two rounds. Wardley, 31, falls to 22 wins and two defeats from 23 fights.

The bout drew a sell-out crowd of 19,000, with Wardley receiving strong support and Dubois jeered during his ring walk. The two fighters had 41 knockouts between them before the opening bell.

Why Wardley took the immediate rematch

Wardley had been bloodied and swollen in May, and there were concerns he returned too soon rather than taking time to rebuild. Davison had also been criticised for not stopping the first fight sooner. Wardley chose the rematch anyway, and said afterwards there is no shame in losing when testing himself against the best.

His career path remains unusual. A former recruitment consultant, Wardley had four white-collar fights before turning professional in 2017, and he became a world champion less than a decade after that switch.

What comes next for Dubois

Dubois, a two-time heavyweight world champion who turned professional in 2017, lost to Oleksandr Usyk in 2023 and again the following year, with wins over Jarrell Miller, Filip Hrgovic and Anthony Joshua in between. He said he now wants whoever is next in line, big fights and big money.

Hrgovic, the IBF heavyweight titleholder, entered the ring after the fight and both men want a rematch. Promoter Frank Warren wants Hrgovic to defend his IBF title in Croatia first. Dubois could also face the winner of December’s Anthony Joshua-Tyson Fury fight, where the WBA super title is expected to be at stake.
