Apple Intelligence Set for China Debut in iOS 27.3 After Two-Year Wait

Apple Intelligence China is finally moving toward a consumer release. The company plans to deliver the feature set in iOS 27.3, expected in December, according to Bloomberg. The timing ends a wait that stretches back to the technology’s original introduction in iOS 18.1, which left Chinese users without the tools for roughly two years.

What the launch will include

The first release in China will not mirror the full global feature set. Basic capabilities such as editing are part of the plan. More advanced tools remain absent. Siri AI will not be available at launch. Playground is missing, and the newer version of Genmoji is also excluded. Text generation tools will be limited as well.

Regulatory path and local partners

China restricts foreign AI technology, a policy that forced Apple to work through domestic partners. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently granted network access permits that cover Alibaba’s Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models. Apple partnered with Alibaba and Baidu to meet local requirements. The government must approve ongoing AI model updates, so the clearance is not a one-time event.

Apple received initial clearance in July, but that was not enough for a consumer launch. Additional clearance was needed, and the recent permits supply it. The South China Morning Post reported the ministry’s action.

Which iPhones get the features

The Alibaba models are set to reach the iPhone Duo, the iPhone 18 Pro, and earlier iPhones. The full list of supported earlier models has not been detailed. The exact December release date is also unspecified, as are the precise basic features beyond editing and the performance users can expect.

Competitive pressure at home

Huawei and other Chinese smartphone makers already offer AI features. Without comparable tools, Apple has been at a disadvantage in the market. The iOS 27.3 release is intended to close that gap, though the missing Siri AI, Playground, and newer Genmoji mean the Chinese version will still trail the global offering. Apple has not announced a firm launch day.
