Deshpande’s Hat-Trick Sinks Chandigarh as Mumbai Tighten Grip

Tushar Deshpande hat-trick — Tushar Deshpande marked his 50th first-class appearance with a stunning hat-trick and a five-wicket haul as Mumbai took complete control of their Ranji Trophy Elite Group D match against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium. Deshpande finished with 5 for 17 from seven overs, a spell that helped skittle Chandigarh for just 78 in 19.1 overs — their lowest first-class total — and allowed Mumbai to enforce the follow-on.

Deshpande’s hat-trick arrived in the 11th over, removing Arjun Azad, Shivam Bhambri and Deepinder Kush in successive deliveries. Earlier in the innings, he had dismissed Arsalan Khan and trapped Raj Angad Bawa lbw for a four-ball duck. His five-wicket haul was completed in just 20 balls, a burst that left Chandigarh reeling. Deshpande became the sixth Mumbai bowler to take a first-class hat-trick, joining an elite list that includes Abdul Ismail, Umesh Kulkarni, Jahangir Khot and Royston Dias.

Chandigarh's Collapse and Mumbai's Batting Might

Chandigarh’s innings never gained momentum, with Mohit Avasthi providing excellent support by taking 3 for 9 from six overs. The collapse saw five wickets fall for just four runs as Mumbai’s bowlers ran through the line-up. Earlier, Mumbai had posted 429 in 136.5 overs, built on a strong lower-order effort. Resuming Day Two at 249 for 5, Mumbai lost Siddhesh Lad for 86 off 192 balls and Shams Mulani for 39 off 68 balls, but the lower order added 180 runs. Tanush Kotian scored 58 off 91 balls — his 19th first-class half-century — while Mohit Avasthi remained unbeaten on 56 off 119 balls, his fourth first-class fifty. Deshpande himself contributed 44 off 47 balls. Raj Angad Bawa took 4 for 73 and Rohit Dhanda 4 for 78 for Chandigarh.

Follow-On and Second Innings

Mumbai’s 351-run first-innings lead left Chandigarh with a mountain to climb. Deshpande struck again in the second innings, bowling Vishu Kashyap for a three-ball duck, leaving Chandigarh at 0 for 1 at the end of Day Two. Mumbai will aim to wrap up a bonus-point win on Tuesday morning. Deshpande’s performance came after he was overlooked for the India ‘A’ touring party for the New Zealand tour, though he had recently scored 52 for India ‘A’ against Australia ‘A’ in Pondicherry.

With Chandigarh’s second innings barely underway, Mumbai are firmly in command and will look to finish the job quickly on the third day.
