iPhone Duo Pre-Orders Slip to January 25 Within Minutes

Apple opened iPhone Duo pre-orders at 5 a.m. Pacific Time today, and the first buyers were quoted delivery on the October 23 launch day. Thirty minutes later, iPhone Duo pre-order wait times had stretched to January 25 across every color and storage configuration.

A half-hour shift from launch day to late January

By 5:30 a.m. PT, the Apple online store listed the same January 25 estimate for all variants. That includes both finishes, Star White and Night Sky, and all four storage options: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The delay is uniform, not limited to the largest-capacity models or a single color.

The practical effect is that anyone ordering online now will not receive an iPhone Duo before Christmas. Apple’s shipping estimates reflect a combination of supply and demand, and the company has not disclosed how many units were available on day one.

Supply was expected to be thin

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman had said iPhone Duo supply would be limited. Earlier reports described manufacturing challenges and low production yield, though the brief does not specify the cause of the yield problems. The speed of the slip — from launch-day delivery to late January in half an hour — suggests demand met a constrained initial allotment almost immediately.

How many pre-orders were placed is unknown. So is the exact volume of day-one supply. What is clear is that the online store’s inventory of launch-day units was exhausted quickly enough that the estimate changed for every configuration at once.

Launch-day stores and pickup remain uncertain

Apple Store pickup was briefly available during the pre-order window, then disabled. Customers cannot currently see pickup availability for the iPhone Duo. Apple advises checking pickup availability on Saturday, October 24 — the day after launch.

Visiting an Apple Store on launch day, Friday, October 23, may be the earliest alternative for buyers who want the device soon. Walk-in inventory is likely to be very tight, based on how quickly the shipping estimate slipped. Whether pickup will reopen on October 24 is not known.

Resellers including Best Buy also sell the iPhone Duo, giving buyers another channel to check. For now, online orders through Apple carry the January 25 estimate, and the only confirmed dates are the October 23 launch and the October 24 pickup check.
