GTA 6 Gets Japan’s CERO Z Rating — But Missing Labels Raise Censorship Questions
The GTA 6 CERO Z rating has surfaced in Japan, confirming the game is restricted to players 18 and older. GameSpark spotted the label on both Xbox and PlayStation Store listings, a development that came after the October 15 launch trailer had circulated without any CERO marking attached. The rating itself is not a surprise for a Grand Theft Auto title, but the details behind it are worth a closer look.
What the CERO Z Label Actually Lists

Japan’s CERO Z rating means the game is suitable for ages 18 and up. On the GTA 6 listing, the content descriptors are limited to Violence and Crime. No label for Nudity, Sex, or Drugs appears on the CERO submission.
That omission stands out against Rockstar’s own public materials. The company’s website states that adult content is present in GTA 6, and the launch trailer includes intimate scenes between Jason and Lucia. A leaked PEGI 18 description also referenced on-demand cocaine use, though the full contents of that leak have not been confirmed.
Whether the missing labels point to a censored Japanese release is not settled. CERO Z does not, by itself, prove that content was removed. It is possible that Rockstar submitted a version with those elements adjusted for the Japanese market, but the company has not confirmed any regional edits.
GTA 5 Set a Familiar Pattern in Japan
There is precedent for concern. GTA 5 also received a CERO Z rating in Japan, and its Japanese release arrived later than the North American launch. Rockstar never announced the reasons for that delay. What is known is that the Japanese version removed a sexual encounter involving Trevor, and nudity tied to strippers and prostitutes was less visible than in other regions. Most violence remained intact, with the exception of a torture mission.
That history suggests CERO’s strict approach to nudity and sex could shape how GTA 6 is handled. It does not guarantee cuts, but it gives the missing labels on the GTA 6 listing more weight than they might otherwise carry.
How Other Regions Have Rated GTA 6
Japan’s 18+ rating fits the pattern seen elsewhere. The ESRB gave GTA 6 a Mature 17+ rating in North America. Australia’s classification board issued an R 18+ rating, citing drugs and adult content. That is notable because GTA 5 avoided Australian revisions, while earlier GTA titles did require changes in the country.
Across most major territories, the ratings for GTA 6 line up with the ones GTA 5 received. The Japanese label follows that trend, even as the descriptor list raises its own questions.
What Rockstar Has and Has Not Said
Rockstar has not confirmed edits for any region. The CERO Z rating appeared after the October 15 trailer, and the game’s release date is described as approaching. For now, the rating confirms the age restriction in Japan without confirming what version of the game Japanese players will receive.
