From 23 to 30 September 2022, the Czech capital will host the eighth European Week of Sport 2022, an annual event that brings the continent’s sporting community together. Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic and the fifth most visited city in Europe, offers a fitting stage for a celebration of movement and competition.

A city of culture and sport

Prague is known for its spires, bridges and astronomical clock, and its cultural heritage includes figures such as composers Antonín Dvořák and Franz Kafka, and the Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha. Beyond art and history, the city has a strong sporting tradition, with venues that reflect its place in European sport.

Great Strahov Stadium and the Spartakiads

Away from the crowded city centre, reached by the Petřín funicular, lies Great Strahov Stadium. It is the largest modern stadium in the world, and the second largest sports venue ever built, with a total capacity of 250,000 and 56,000 seated places.

During the Cold War, the stadium hosted the Spartakiads, mass gymnastic events held every five years. Thousands of gymnasts from across the country took part, performing complex formations.

Czech sporting achievements

The Czech Republic’s sporting record spans several disciplines. In tennis, Petr Korda won the 1998 Australian Open singles title and reached a career-high ranking of No. 2 that same year. On the ice, the Czech Republic men’s national ice hockey team claimed gold at the 1998 Winter Olympics and later added numerous world championships.

In football, Czechoslovakia won the UEFA European Championship in 1976, and the Czech Republic finished as runner-up in 1996, with the final played against England.
