Blue Jackets Edge Penguins in Shootout After Severson’s Return
The Columbus Blue Jackets defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 in a shootout on Oct. 9 at Nationwide Arena, improving their record to 2-1-0. The Blue Jackets Penguins shootout victory came after Columbus dominated possession for much of the game, outshooting Pittsburgh 45-22.
Severson's Impact in Return

Damon Severson, playing his first game after a six-month shoulder rehabilitation, made an immediate impact. He opened the scoring at 10:52 of the first period with a one-timer from Zach Werenski. Severson then assisted on Mathieu Olivier’s goal with 8:20 left in the second period, giving Columbus a 2-0 lead.
Cole Sillinger contributed two assists on the night. The Blue Jackets controlled play early, holding a 9-3 shot advantage after the first period and extending it to 30-10 after the second. In the first 10:21 of the second period alone, Columbus outshot Pittsburgh 15-1.
Penguins Rally to Force Overtime

Pittsburgh responded before the second intermission. Bryan Rust scored with 5:30 left in the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1. Evgeni Malkin then tied the game 2-2 at 3:19 of the third period, completing the comeback from a two-goal deficit.
Overtime produced no goal, though the Blue Jackets had a 2-on-0 rush with Matthew Knies and Adam Fantilli. Neither team could convert, sending the game to a shootout.
Shootout and Goaltending
In the shootout, Kent Johnson scored the decisive goal for Columbus. Goaltender Cam Talbot stopped all three Pittsburgh attempts, securing the win. Talbot finished with 20 saves in regulation and overtime.
At the other end, Pittsburgh’s Sergei Murashov was busy, making 44 saves through 65 minutes. Despite the loss, his performance kept the Penguins in the game.
Records and Next Game
