Javelinas Slip to Fourth as McCoy’s Power and Salas’s Award Highlight AFL Week Two
The Arizona Fall League week two Peoria Javelinas update shows a team treading water in the standings but producing individual storylines worth tracking. Peoria went 2-3 across the week and now sits at 5-6 overall, fourth in the AFL table and 2.5 games behind the Scottsdale Scorpions and Surprise Saguaros. A rainout forced a rescheduling into what had been an off day, compressing the Javelinas’ week further.
Pitching: Kemp roughed up, Chourio wild

Kannon Kemp took the ball on Oct. 10 and worked three innings, allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Two of those runs scored on a home run.
Winyer Chourio’s Oct. 14 start was shorter and shakier. He lasted 2.2 innings, giving up one hit and two runs while walking six and striking out two. Chourio threw three wild pitches and needed 59 pitches to record 25 strikes. His command problems mirror the struggles he showed in parts of the 2026 season.
The bullpen offered cleaner lines. Francis Peña tossed a scoreless inning with no hits, runs, walks or strikeouts. Igor Gil went 1.2 innings, surrendering one hit and two walks while striking out three.
McCoy’s power, Harvey’s opportunity
Alex McCoy played two games and launched his second AFL home run, a 435-foot shot on Oct. 15 that left the bat at 118.2 mph against an 89.3 mph sinker. Impressive as that was, it was not McCoy’s hardest-hit ball of 2026: he recorded a 119.5 mph groundout on April 12 for Fort Wayne and a 118 mph home run for Lake Elsinore.
McCoy, a 6-foot-5 outfielder, missed time in 2025 due to injury, but that is not reportedly why he is in the AFL. The Padres want him exposed to different pitching, a challenge aimed at a hitter with high strikeout and swing-and-miss tendencies.
Ty Harvey also played two games and drove in two runs. At 20 years old, he is one month younger than Ethan Salas. Harvey, a potential plus power hitter, missed big portions of the 2026 season and is making up for lost time. He was the catcher of record for most of Lake Elsinore’s championship run. Justin DeCriscio matched Harvey’s two RBI over two games.
Sam Dykstra, writing for MLB Pipeline on MLB.com, featured McCoy and Harvey in his AFL update.
Salas earns defensive honor
Ethan Salas was named MiLB Defensive Player of the Year, recognition of his standing as a plus defender. The award likely marks the end of his minor league career, and he is assured a chance to win the Padres’ starting job in 2027. Salas will work with Padres catching coach Kevin Plawecki, who has been credited with helping Luis Campusano improve.
