Antonelli F1 Title Austin: Kimi Can Clinch at COTA

Kimi Antonelli F1 title Austin is now the central question of the season. With 340 points, the Mercedes driver leads the standings and can secure the championship at the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas on Oct. 23-25. The scenario is simple on paper: win in Austin, and the title is his.

The exact clinch scenario

Antonelli needs to win the US Grand Prix while George Russell finishes ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton finishes fifth or lower. If those conditions are met, the title is decided in Texas.

Max Verstappen’s result does not affect the clinch. The permutations turn only on Russell and Hamilton, the two drivers closest to Antonelli in the standings.

Why the thresholds are what they are

Antonelli enters Austin with 340 points. Russell is second on 238, Hamilton third on 229. Six rounds remain, offering a maximum of 150 points. If Antonelli wins in Austin, he would have 365 points. After Austin, five rounds remain, with a maximum of 125 points available. That means rivals on 239 points or fewer cannot catch 365. Russell, on 238, and Hamilton, on 229, are both below that threshold. The specific finishing positions for Russell and Hamilton follow from that math.

Singapore set the stage

Verstappen won the Singapore Grand Prix from pole. Leclerc finished second, and Antonelli third. The result extended Antonelli’s lead and moved the title fight to the brink of an early conclusion. Hamilton started on mediums, pitted for softs, and apologized to Ferrari over the radio. Stroll, Colapinto, and Bortoleto retired from the race.

Perez and the penalty loophole

In wet conditions in Singapore, Perez caused contact with Stroll at Turn 16. Perez locked his front right before the contact. FIA Document 54 found Perez predominantly at fault and stated that a five-second penalty was warranted. No penalty was applied because Perez was not classified. Five-second penalties do not normally convert to grid drops, which closed off that route.

NASCAR and Spire news

NASCAR officials reviewed the McDowell-Stenhouse incident at the Charlotte Roval and issued no penalties. Spire Motorsports announced that Daniel Suarez will retain the Cup seat for 2027. Kasey Kahne is returning to the truck series with Spire.

Rwanda agreement announced

F1 announced a 10-year agreement for a Rwanda race. The circuit is planned in Bugesera, 40 km south of Kigali. The first race is expected in the early 2030s. The circuit does not exist yet. The FIA president tied V8 promises to the Rwanda race.

Goodyear will bring proven tire combinations to Phoenix for all three national series. NASCAR Cup playoffs run at Phoenix Raceway on Oct. 18.
