Haaland Injury Scare Overshadows Manchester City’s Win as Maresca Faces Fitness Questions

Erling Haaland hobbled off for Manchester City against Ipswich Town.

Manchester City’s 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday was marred by a late Erling Haaland injury scare, though manager Enzo Maresca revealed after the match that the striker told him he was OK.

Haaland, who had scored twice and was chasing a hat-trick, was hurt in stoppage time when Ipswich substitute Jack Clarke challenged him with studs up. Clarke made contact with both the ball and Haaland, leaving the City forward hobbling for more than a minute.

Visibly distressed and angry, Haaland appealed for full time and went down the tunnel after the whistle. The incident came as Ipswich, newly promoted and pushing for an equalizer, were pressing for a late goal. Haaland had been leading a counterattack when Clarke’s challenge arrived.

Maresca’s Positive Update on Haaland

Speaking after the match, Maresca said Haaland told him he was OK. The manager added that the club hopes the injury is not serious, offering some relief to City supporters who had watched their star striker limp through the closing moments.

Haaland’s form has been relentless. He now has 12 goals in his last eight Manchester City appearances, a run that underlines his importance to a side dealing with ongoing turmoil. Maresca earlier this season spoke of the value of a happy Erling, saying a happy Erling means a happy life for the team.

Five Fitness Concerns for City

Haaland was not the only City player with fitness questions after the win. Antoine Semenyo, who came on in the 77th minute, did not finish the match unscathed. Maresca said Semenyo needs to be assessed and described him as the main player to wait on.

Mateo Kovačić, Nico O’Reilly and Matheus Nunes were also forced off. Maresca downplayed the issues for Kovačić and Nunes, but confirmed that O’Reilly has a back problem, making the young defender’s condition a specific concern.

The quintet of fitness worries leaves Maresca managing a congested fixture list with limited certainty over who will be available. City host AEK Athens in the Champions League on Tuesday before travelling to Aston Villa for Saturday’s early kickoff. They then face Brighton & Hove Albion twice at the end of October.

Rotation Likely for Champions League Clash

Maresca has promised to rest Haaland, and the midweek Champions League match against AEK Athens may provide the opportunity to do so. Whether Haaland plays on Tuesday remains uncertain, but the manager’s stated intention to manage his workload suggests a break could be on the cards.

For now, the positive signal from Haaland himself is the most reassuring news City have received on a night when multiple players left the pitch with concerns. The exact nature and severity of his injury have not been confirmed, and the club will continue to monitor all five players as the fixtures come thick and fast.
