Arsenal are reducing their workforce, with up to 60 off-field roles set to be cut across several departments. The Arsenal job cuts amount to as much as seven per cent of the club’s 871 permanent staff, and chief executive Richard Garlick informed employees of the decision this week.

The redundancies are confined to off-field positions. Coaching and performance staff are excluded, and both the men’s and women’s setups remain untouched. The Arsenal Foundation, Arsenal in the Community and security staff are also protected from the cuts.

An external company carried out a review of the workforce. That review was already under way before Arsenal won the Premier League title last season.

Mikel Arteta, who signed a new four-year contract one week before the cuts were announced, said the question of the redundancies was not one for him to answer. The manager said the club had explained the exercise and analysis to him, and that the intention was to evolve and improve.

He added that decisions were needed to place people in the right roles and to keep investing, with the aim being the success the club wants to create. Arteta said he is not the right person to answer questions on the cuts and hoped people would respect that position.

Timing and financial context

The announcement comes shortly after Arteta, 44, committed his future to Arsenal. His new deal raised his salary above £10m a year and includes £5m in additional bonuses. Arteta was appointed Arsenal boss in December 2019 and led the club to a first Premier League title since 2004 last season.

Arsenal reported record revenues of £691m for the 2024-25 financial year, but the club still posted an overall loss of £1.4m. Operating costs rose to £200.8m from £147.9m the previous year.

The club’s next match is away at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
