Jermain Defoe stands alone at the top of the Premier League super subs, with 24 substitute goals across a career that spanned 17 years between his first and last top-flight strikes. The ranking, compiled by Alex Bysouth, weighs consistent substitute goals and assists over entire careers, and it places Defoe ahead of a field that includes some of the most celebrated impact players in the league’s history.

1. Jermain Defoe — 24 substitute goals, scored across 24 different fixtures, including five that won matches. Six of those goals came in his debut Premier League season, and he is also England’s highest-scoring substitute with seven goals.

2. Nwankwo Kanu — 17 substitute goals and 12 substitute assists. Kanu made 56 of his 119 Arsenal Premier League appearances from the bench, and 31% of his league goals came as a substitute.

3. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer — 17 substitute goals, 19% of his Premier League total, at an average of one every 83 minutes. His four late goals in an 8-1 win at Nottingham Forest in February remain a defining cameo, and he also scored the 1999 Champions League final winner.

4. Edin Dzeko — 17 goal contributions in 56 substitute appearances, at a rate of one every 63 minutes. Dzeko scored 50 Premier League goals for Manchester City, more than a quarter of them from the bench, including a stoppage-time header against QPR on the final day of the 2012 season.

5. Javier Hernandez — 19 substitute goals in 78 appearances off the bench, 36% of his Premier League total, at one every 88 minutes.

6. Tore Andre Flo — 12 substitute goals and three substitute assists. Flo scored 12 of his 34 Premier League goals as a substitute, beginning with his Chelsea debut in 1997.

7. Olivier Giroud — 21 substitute goals, second all-time, from 103 substitute appearances across 10 Premier League seasons.

8. Daniel Sturridge — 17 substitute goals and seven substitute assists, with 22% of his Premier League goals coming as a substitute.

9. Victor Anichebe — 13 substitute goals and five substitute assists. Half of his 26 Premier League goals were scored after coming off the bench.

10. Theo Walcott — 10 substitute goals and a record 14 substitute assists. Walcott scored those goals for Arsenal, Everton and Southampton, and he also holds the record for being substituted off 168 times.

Records and near misses

Walcott’s assist tally is the benchmark for creativity from the bench, while Defoe’s goal record has stood despite competition from Giroud, whose 21 substitute goals place him second on the all-time list. Solskjaer and Dzeko share the best minutes-per-goal rate among the top 10, though Dzeko’s overall contribution rate edges ahead when assists are included.

Several players with strong claims did not make the final 10. Adam le Fondre scored five substitute goals in a single season, including a three-game scoring spell in January 2013. Hernan Crespo managed six goals in 16 substitute appearances, and Mark Robins scored five in 14. Divock Origi scored half his Premier League goals as a substitute, Roman Pavlyuchenko 45% of his 20, and Danny Welbeck has 19 substitute goals, 12 of them for Brighton. Richarlison matches Sturridge for minutes per goal contribution.

Mikel Arteta has suggested calling substitutes ‘finishers’, a label that fits the players above. Readers can comment with their own choices for the greatest impact sub.
