Guardians Hand Game 4 to Armstrong, Bullpen With ALCS Lead in Hand

The Cleveland Guardians will not hand the ball to a conventional starter for ALCS Game 4. Shawn Armstrong gets the first inning at Progressive Field, and the Guardians are treating the evening as a bullpen game with a 2-1 series lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Why Cleveland Is Piecing It Together

The Guardians’ rotation is thin after Gavin Williams and Parker Messick, which leaves the staff to cover nine innings by committee. Joey Cantillo or Tanner Bibee could serve as the bulk reliever behind Armstrong, though Cleveland has not settled which one will carry the longer stretch.

Armstrong has been nearly untouchable in the postseason: he has retired 16 of the 17 batters he has faced. The former Oriole gives Cleveland a reliable first step, and the bullpen behind him has already kept Tampa Bay to three runs or fewer in each of the first three games.

Martinez Draws the Assignment for Tampa Bay

Nick Martinez starts for the Rays in what will be his second career postseason start. The 35-year-old right-hander posted a 3.10 ERA across 31 starts in 2026, and his only previous playoff start came in the ALDS against the Yankees, when he allowed two runs in 3.2 innings.

Martinez’s task begins with Chase DeLauter and José Ramírez. DeLauter has three extra-base hits in 10 at-bats this series, while Ramírez is 6-for-12 and has been the most consistent bat in Cleveland’s lineup.

The Rays’ Top Order Has Gone Quiet

Tampa Bay owned the American League’s best regular-season record, but its leading hitters have not carried that form into the ALCS. Yandy Díaz, Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero are a combined 5-for-34 in the series. Aranda is 0-for-10, and Caminero has struck out seven times in 11 at-bats.

Those struggles help explain why the Rays have not broken through against Cleveland’s pitching. Tampa Bay will need its top three to produce if it is to avoid returning home trailing in the series.

Brewers Already Waiting

The Milwaukee Brewers completed a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS and are headed to their first World Series since 1982, when the franchise was still in the American League. Milwaukee rallied from deficits in all four games of the series, ending the Dodgers’ run as two-time defending champions.

The Brewers will meet the ALCS winner. Cleveland would prefer to close out the Rays without a return trip to Tampa, and a win in Game 4 would move the Guardians within one game of the pennant.

Game Time and Broadcast

First pitch is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET on October 16, 2026. The game airs on TBS and HBO Max. Game 5, if necessary, would be played tomorrow at Progressive Field.
