Bo Nix on Broncos’ Passing Problems: ‘Why It’s Not Working’
Bo Nix Broncos offense questions dominated the conversation after Denver escaped with a 17-14 overtime win over Seattle on Thursday night. Nix threw for just over 100 yards, no touchdowns, and the Broncos managed only two first downs in the second half. The numbers told a story of an offense stuck in neutral, and Nix addressed it directly after the game.
Nix’s Explanation: Soft Coverage and Third Downs

Nix said he saw the field well early when opportunities to be aggressive presented themselves. As the game progressed, third downs became the key. The Seahawks, coached by Mike Macdonald, sat in a soft Cover 2 shell, according to Nix. He described defenses sitting back and limiting vertical throws.
“I don’t understand why it’s not working,” Nix said of the vertical passing game. He noted that outlets were available for about 10 yards of space. The Broncos’ longest reception was 16 yards, and RJ Harvey led all Denver receivers with 31 yards.
Despite the frustration, Nix made clear the team will keep running the football. He said he hopes to find ways to get more out of the run game. That commitment may reflect the reality of what defenses are giving them.
Fitzpatrick’s Sharp Criticism
Ryan Fitzpatrick did not hold back. The former quarterback called Nix’s performance an insult to the quarterback position and described it as garbage. The criticism came after a game in which Nix failed to throw a touchdown and the Broncos scored no points in the second period.
Context matters, though. Sam Darnold performed worse than Nix, and the Seahawks defense is considered one of the top units in the league. Denver still won against the reigning Super Bowl champions.
The Bigger : Nix’s Future
Nix is 26 years old, and his long-term future in Denver is under scrutiny. A win is a win, but the passing offense’s limitations have raised questions. For now, Nix and the Broncos will keep leaning on the run game while searching for answers in the air.
