Austin Simmons Faces Ole Miss as Missouri’s Quarterback
Austin Simmons Ole Miss return becomes the central storyline Saturday when the Missouri quarterback steps back into Vaught-Hemingway Stadium wearing an opposing uniform. The No. 13 Tigers (5-1, 2-1 SEC) visit No. 9 Ole Miss (4-1, 2-1 SEC) in a game that reunites Simmons with the program he once seemed set to lead.
From starter to spectator in two weeks

Simmons opened the 2025 season as Ole Miss’s starting quarterback, the heir apparent to Jaxson Dart. That plan lasted less than two games. Late in the Rebels’ week-two game at Kentucky, Simmons was injured. Trinidad Chambliss took over and never gave the job back.
Chambliss, a transfer from Ferris State who arrived as an expected depth piece, guided Ole Miss to its first College Football Playoff appearance. The Rebels came one incomplete catch short of the national championship game. Thirteen months after losing the starting role, Simmons left for Missouri, where he was also expected to provide depth.
Golding knows what Missouri is getting
Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding has seen Simmons up close. As a defensive coordinator, Golding schemed against him in practice, and that familiarity shapes his assessment of the matchup.
Golding described Simmons as having elite arm talent and elite leadership ability. He also said Simmons is more athletic than expected, a detail that could matter if the quarterback extends plays outside the pocket. Knowing Simmons, Golding added, helps more than it hurts.
Chambliss braces for a strange reunion
For Chambliss, the game carries a personal edge. He and Simmons were close during their time together at Ole Miss, and Chambliss credited Simmons for helping him learn the playbook.
Seeing Simmons in a different uniform will be weird, Chambliss said. He also called Missouri a really good team, a description backed by the Tigers’ results. Missouri beat Florida after the Gators beat Ole Miss, then beat Texas A&M at home. A loss at Mississippi State prevented Missouri from an unbeaten SEC record.
Familiar faces on both sidelines
Simmons is not the only former Rebel returning. Cayden Lee and Chris Graves Jr. also come back to Oxford with Missouri. Ole Miss previously hosted Lane Kiffin’s return, making this the second unique homecoming in as many home games.
The records are identical in SEC play, and both teams sit at 2-1 in the conference. Ole Miss lost to Florida before beating Vanderbilt. Missouri’s only defeat came in Starkville. Saturday’s outcome will shape the standings for two programs still sorting out their place in the SEC race.
