Liverpool’s £47m Path to Ronald Araujo Narrows After Quansah Sale
The Liverpool Ronald Araujo £47m deal is edging closer to becoming a permanent arrangement, with the club now able to turn the Uruguayan defender’s loan into a full transfer for around that fee. Araujo arrived from Barcelona in August on a deal that runs until the end of the season, and Liverpool have reserved the right to buy him outright. The question of whether they will do so has been sharpened by the sale of Jarell Quansah and by the contract situations of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.
The Quansah sale and its buyback clause

Liverpool sold Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen in summer 2025 for around £30m. The 23-year-old homegrown defender has performed well in the Bundesliga, and his form has pushed him into contention for a starting spot in the England national team under Thomas Tuchel. His sale included a buyback clause, reportedly set at around £60m in 2027.
Araujo's loan and his role in the squad
Araujo, 27, has played at both right back and centre-back since joining, and the loan deal includes a purchase option. His versatility has made him a useful piece for Liverpool, particularly as cover at centre-back and as a top defender at right back. The loan expires at the end of the season, at which point the club must decide whether to trigger the permanent move.
Contract pressure at centre-back
Van Dijk and Gomez are both out of contract next summer. That leaves Liverpool facing a potential defensive need, and the Liverpool Echo noted that the club’s requirement for a centre-back depends on Van Dijk’s future. The report also stated that Van Dijk is out of contract next year, and it is early days in the season. The same report suggested that funds for Araujo could instead have gone toward a Quansah return, with one or the other appearing to be the likely outcome.
What the decision means for Liverpool
The financial comparison is straightforward: around £47m for Araujo, a 27-year-old who can cover two positions, against a reported £60m buyback for Quansah, a 23-year-old who is developing in Germany and pushing for England’s starting XI. Whether Liverpool trigger the Araujo purchase, whether Quansah returns, and what Van Dijk and Gomez decide about their futures all remain unresolved. The Liverpool Echo report, published earlier this week, framed the Araujo deal as moving closer, but also made clear that the club’s defensive planning is still in motion.
